Best Broadband Deals if you live in the countryside

Which are the best broadband deals if you live in the countryside or want to move to a remote part of the country?

It’s a problem that has no easy answer but it well worth researching if having a good fast broadband internet connection is important to you, but you also want to be able to live somewhere where the quality of life is different to that in the cities. If you already live somewhere that doesn’t have the best broadband deals that many city dwellers enjoy available to you then you you’ll still want to get the best internet service you can, possibly regardless of the price really. Working with a slow internet is both inefficient and also unpleasant and frustrating so paying a bit more just to get the kind of service that others would take for granted is still worthwhile.

The key factor is coverage.

So how do you find out if your area or intended area is covered by the better broadband internet service suppliers? Well one way to find out is to go to the various broadband ISPs websites and find the part which deals with enquiries about coverage. There you will be asked for a postcode, landline telephone number, or both. From this you’ll get an answer which tells you whether it will be possible to order a broadband package deal from that supplier, but it won’t really tell you how fast the eventual internet connection is likely to run at. That’s because the ultimate connection speed is going to depend on a number of factors including the quality of the wiring into your house and the distance from the telephone exchange. The state of the specific telephone exchange local to the house is important too. If it’s an old one that hasn’t be upgraded to work with modern fast broadband, then you could be stuck for a long time without a slow internet connection until BT finally decide to get around to upgrading that exchange.

But you might not find out that the internet connection is impossibly slow at your new house in the countryside until after you’ve already moved in! How annoying is that?

Researching Best Broadband Deals

So my suggestion is that you do some research on the ground rather than from your computer. You’ll need to find out if any prospective neighbours have already grappled with the rural broadband problem and see which solutions they have come up with. Be careful though, because the potential service from just half a mile down the lane might be very different, so if you find a good result nearby then try to check that they are actually connected to the same telephone exchange as the house you are thinking of moving in to. You might be able to do this by looking at the telegraph poles and wire going from the road to the houses, or by enquiring at BT themselves.

It may sound extreme to base a decision on whether or not to buy or rent a particular property partly on the availability or otherwise of best broadband deals in the exact location, but if your work or other large part of life is dependent on using an acceptably fast broadband in the house then it’s going to have a big impact on everyday living and just getting by more easily.

what is the cheapest broadband internet out there?

I currently have Bulldog and it costs me 40-50 pounds. I’m looking more along the lines of 15-30 if anyone know any providers, and a review on there service

i’ve used pipex and it works fast for me, but u can also try renewing a subscription to BT

I’m settling my account with virgin due to the sky fiasco & crap.!! i need to keep broadband & tv?? but not a home phone as I have a mobile. Indeed various suggestions & options, ( not BT please?? ) thanks.

Well being that I am not from the UK (dreaming of moving there) I have had to do some research..

I found: broadband.co.uk which lets you search for broadband deals in your area, broadbandchoices.co.uk also does the same, and broadbandgenie.co.uk/broadband_deals.html that also does some searching for you. They all seem like you could get some useful info from these sites.

Sky Broadband reviews?

Now that sky broad band is up and running in most part of the country even here in rural somerset like to have some feed back on their service etc. I am with BT at the moment and although their service has been good they are quite expensive for the full package (option 3) so I’m thinking of going to sky seeing as I have already sky tv. Welcome any feed back bad as well as good. Cheers

I have a friend with Sky (via the phone line – not satelite) and she lives in Bradford. The installation was rubbish so at first it wasn’t much better than dial up but I went over and had a mess and she now get 6Mb plus on a regular basis.

At £10 a month I would give it a go – I am with BT too and have a good bit of my contract to go yet!

how come BT offer great broadband deals for new customers, but dont care about reducing prices for existing?

Cancel your agreement and then you can get 6 months at reduced rate. Causes loads of extra work for BT and you get a better deal. Rip off Britain strikes again!!!!!!
It doesn’t answer the question why they don’t look after their loyal customers without me having to resort to dirty tricks though

I suggested I was considering switching and they offered £5 per month discount to stay with them for another year.
So I did.
Once that's up I'm looking again as I've heard sky can do faster connection speeds around our way even though BT say we can't go any faster..

Best speed, download limit, reliability cost/price and also able to go wireless
I just want the broadband not including TV or anything else.

I would stay well away from BT if I were you. I'm currently using Virgin Media 20meg service. Lightning speeds. And I just got the broadband package so no TV for me. Its costing me £37 month but it’s more than worth it for the speeds I'm getting.
With rumours to upgrade to 40meg soon, I'm not moving anywhere.

What's the best broadband deal for students?

I've been with Virgin Media (previously NTL) for almost a year now, had broadband and tv on a 2 for £20 offer. This offer runs out next month so they might start charging me more and I'm also sick of their crap service and the many problems I've had with them. So I was thinking what are the best student-friendly deals (i.e good broadband, cheap and only a 12 month contract) out there? I wouldn't mind getting just internet instead of internet and TV like I had this year. I was thinking about companies like BT and Sky but don't they charge massive line rental and installation fees?
