How do I know which broadband providers have the highest uptime rate & which ones are the worst in the UK?

I use the Internet for my work and up time is very important for me. I have checked uswitch.com but it’s reviews aren’t written by specialists.
How is Virgin Media (telewest) when it comes to connectivity?

I’m settling my account with virgin due to the sky fiasco & crap.!! i need to keep broadband & tv?? but not a home phone as I have a mobile. Indeed various suggestions & options, ( not BT please?? ) thanks.

Well being that I am not from the UK (dreaming of moving there) I have had to do some research..

I found: broadband.co.uk which lets you search for broadband deals in your area, broadbandchoices.co.uk also does the same, and broadbandgenie.co.uk/broadband_deals.html that also does some searching for you. They all seem like you could get some useful info from these sites.

New News:

Virgin has been trying to calm the internet revolt against them for saying they would limit users’ internet access for commercial ends, stating “We’re not suggesting there will be any denial of access to those who don’t want to pay.” and then going on to confirm their previous anti-net neutrality statement: “VM could offer content providers deals to upgrade their provisioning if they want to ensure best access to to broadband subscribers.”. They did not comment on their earlier statements about putting non-premium content providers on their slower “bus lanes”.

A BT spokesperson gave us the following statement:
“… Unlike Virgin, we think the bandwidth we provide our users should be equal for all services and if services like the BBC iPlayer put too much strain on the bandwidth, both ISP’s and content providers should educate the users on that issue so that users know when and why they may have to upgrade their account for more bandwidth if it exceeds ‘fair use’ terms. We always bear the consumer in mind first and have no plans to prioritize traffic from third party companies. We welcome all the Virgin customers who left because of the net neutrality issue and offer ‘neutral’ bandwidth.”

Update: Sky has now also responded to us with a somewhat vague statement: “As video usage grows, it’s natural that there will be a debate about the best way to invest in additional capacity. We want to be one of the UK’s biggest and best ISPs so we’ll always be guided by the desire to meet customers’ needs for a high-quality internet experience.”

What is the best broadband package in the UK?

Best speed, download limit, reliability cost/price and also able to go wireless
I just want the broadband not including TV or anything else.

I would stay well away from BT if I were you. I'm currently using Virgin Media 20meg service. Lightning speeds. And I just got the broadband package so no TV for me. Its costing me £37 month but it’s more than worth it for the speeds I'm getting.
With rumours to upgrade to 40meg soon, I'm not moving anywhere.

What's the best broadband deal for students?

I've been with Virgin Media (previously NTL) for almost a year now, had broadband and tv on a 2 for £20 offer. This offer runs out next month so they might start charging me more and I'm also sick of their crap service and the many problems I've had with them. So I was thinking what are the best student-friendly deals (i.e good broadband, cheap and only a 12 month contract) out there? I wouldn't mind getting just internet instead of internet and TV like I had this year. I was thinking about companies like BT and Sky but don't they charge massive line rental and installation fees?
